When it comes to “clean eating,” which foods genuinely deserve this term? The most logical answer would be foods that offer positive nutritional benefits with no negative or health-harming components.

We’re frequently offered solutions that resemble a velvet glove with a needle inside. In other words, they have some value but a serious downside too. Certain pharmaceutical drugs are a case in point. They may alleviate symptoms of a given condition, but they typically come with negative side effects, life threatening in some cases.

When it comes to food, we are confronted with similar health compromises, with foods billed as “clean” that actually endanger us. It’s simply unreasonable to suggest that foods that promote illness are either healthy or clean, even if they have some nutritional value.

Meat, dairy, and other animal foods are a prime case in point. They are constantly billed as “healthy” protein sources, yet they are scientifically shown in study after study to promote the most serious health issues Americans face today.

During recent decades, consumption of red meat has been increasing globally, especially in developing countries. At the same time, there is growing evidence that consuming red meat, especially processed meat, may be associated with an increased risk of major chronic diseases including diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, cancer. and mortality.

Additionally, a diet characterized by a high intake of meat, butter, high-fat dairy products, eggs, and refined sugar is now so strongly linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease that scientists refer to this menu as the AD Diet.

Animal foods are logically disqualified from “clean eating” plans not only due to health risks associated with their high levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, but due to the hormones, antibiotics and other contaminants they contain, like harmful bacteria which accumulate in meat with toxic metabolic products and radioactive substances like cadmium and mercury.

If we need further evidence that it’s in our best health interests to minimize foods of animal origin, researchers list red meat, processed meat, eggs, high alcohol consumption, and sugar-sweetened beverages as high risk when it comes to cancer development.
