If you read Depression─Defined, you know this mood disorder is a leading cause of disability throughout the world, afflicting 322 million people globally, according to the World Health Organization.
The hopeless sadness associated with depression can make even simple activities such as working, eating, and sleeping much more difficult than usual. People with depression are also more likely to suffer from anxiety disorders and/or to experience chronic pain.
The efficacy of cannabis in treating mood disorders dates back to 1621 when it was suggested in The Anatomy of Melancholy. Humans have attributed physical, psychological, and emotional benefits to cannabis since its first reported use in 2,600 BC in a Chinese pharmacopoeia.
“First do no harm” was the original guiding force in medicine. Therefore, it makes sense to explore natural solutions with a valid track record of efficacy before resorting to unsafe synthetic drugs, some even requiring a suicide warming on the label.Â
Many studies have since analyzed the effects of cannabis on depression, finding it to be a powerful antidote without the dangerous side effects of commonly prescribed drugs.Â
One way cannabis battles the blues is by increasing serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a naturally occurring brain chemical that controls mood, sleep and appetite. Additionally, cannabinoids like THC and CBD have uplifting properties that help stabilize mood and reduce depression symptoms.
In a 2020 study, Â researchers explain that the endocannabinoid system is widely distributed throughout the body and brain. It’s functions may be modified by supplementing cannabinoids, which has application for major depression, generalized anxiety and bipolar disorders.
Humans are highly receptive biologically to the benefits of medical cannabis based on our natural brain circuitry.Â
Through direct and indirect actions, endocannabinoids within our own brain work with cannabinoids we consume, offering neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory benefits.Â
A higher CBD (non-psychoactive) to THC (psychoactive) appears to be most effective overall for mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.
