Candida is a fungal yeast that naturally lives on the skin and inside the human body, such as in the mouth, gut, and vagina. It is normally harmless, but when the balance of bacteria is disrupted, it can overgrow and cause a fungal infection known as candidiasis.

When Candida multiplies out of control, it typically causes localized infections in warm, moist areas such as the mouth as well as the vagina, known as yeast infections. It can also lead to an esophageal infection called Thrush, which can make swallowing painful.

In some cases, Candida can enter the bloodstream and spread to internal organs like the brain, kidneys, or heart. This severe, life-threatening condition is known as invasive candidiasis. Hospitalized patients or those with severely weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk.

While Candida infections are not 100% preventable, you can greatly reduce your risk by understanding common triggers. These include:

  • Antibiotic use – Taking antibiotics decimates the “good” bacteria that normally keep yeast under control.
  • Diabetes: High blood sugar creates an environment where yeast thrives.
  • Depressed immune system – Conditions like HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, or immunosuppressive drugs lower your body’s defenses.
  • Hormonal shifts – Pregnancy, birth control, or hormone therapy can shift your body’s natural hormonal balance, which may increase risk.
