Phytoestrogens are natural compounds derived from plant foods such as soy, flaxseed, nuts, and legumes. These include isoflavones, lignans, and coumestans, among others, which are structured similarly to human estrogen. This allows them to bind to estrogen receptors and exert weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects in the body.

Due to their structural similarity to estradiol, phytoestrogens act as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). They essentially operate like adaptogens, increasing estrogenic activity when levels are low, such as during the menopause transition, or block it when levels are too high for optimal health.

Foods high in phytoestrogens include soy products like tofu, tempeh, miso, and soybeans, flaxseed, sesame seeds, dried fruits, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, all of which may help manage menopausal symptoms and reduce the risk of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis.
