If you read Chronic Pain−Defined, you understand that this term refers to pain that lasts 3-6 months or more, which can be driven by a variety of factors. The primary causes of chronic pain include:

Arthritis – This term refers to over 100 conditions causing joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation, with major types including osteoarthritis, which is due to wear-and-tear, rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune condition, and diet-related gout, which is crystal-induced.

Autoimmune disorders – Conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, fibromyalgia, and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Chronic back pain – This stems from various structural, inflammatory, or neurological issues, including degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, arthritis, and chronic muscle strain. Common forms involve radiating nerve pain, or sciatica, localized aches, or pain from weakened, deconditioned muscles.

Chronic diseases – These may include various forms of cancer, infections, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or Type 2 diabetes, which drives neuropathy.

Emotional trauma – As with past injuries, pain due to emotional trauma such as physical or emotional abuse or PTSD also alters the nervous system. Additionally, “frozen” neural memories may lead to a chronic fight-or-flight state of mind and body.

Headaches – Chronic headache disorders include chronic migraines, chronic tension-type headaches, and new daily persistent headaches (NDPH), all of which may cause persistent pain, often triggered by stress, muscle tension, or hormonal changes, and can significantly impair daily function.

Neuropathy or nerve damage – This form of chronic pain results from “misfiring” peripheral nerves due to underlying conditions like autoimmune diseases, kidney/liver disorders, toxins, or genetic mutations. It’s typically caused by nerve damage arising from diabetes, chronic alcohol use, nutritional deficiencies, infections, and physical trauma.

Past Injuries or trauma – Past physical injuries like fractures, surgeries, or chronic overuse) drive chronic pain by altering the nervous system, creating “stuck” neural memories.
