Originally discovered in human semen, spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine in the human body. Polyamines are essential organic molecules found in all living cells, characterized by multiple amino groups.

Spermidine is produced via the collective metabolic pathways of gut bacteria, bacteria-host co-metabolism, and by activated immune cells.

A growing body of research suggests that spermidine may slow down aging and promote healthy longevity while helping to regulate important biological processes, such as:

  • Stimulating autophagy, the body process of breaking down and recycling cellular waste, disposing of damaged or defective mitochondria.
  • Helping to maintain intracellular pH for healthy, functional cells.
  • Cellular signaling via autophagy―cellular cleanup―enhancing mitochondrial function and modulating key enzyme activities.
  • Supporting cerebral cortex/brain function by promoting autophagy, reducing inflammation, and improving mitochondrial health.
  • Amino acid conversion: spermidine is synthesized from the amino acid ornithine and is involved in creating unique amino acid derivatives.
